Caroline Rose possesses that wild-and-loose musicianship and devil-may-care confidence that is winning over the fans of Shovels & Rope, whom she’s opening for this winter. Together, they’re touring the Southeast before wrapping things up on Valentine’s Day with a sold-out show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
Although Rose grew up in the Northeast, she gets down to Nashville occasionally. And she doesn’t even have to leave home because she actually lives in the back of her van. After securing an official showcase at the Americana Music Conference last fall, she cruised by the CMT studio to play “I Will Not Be Afraid,” the empowering title cut of her debut album.
“I’d been kind of tapping into my roots a little bit more,” she said. “I went to visit my Southern family, down in Mississippi. I think I just got more and more into that music, and then I got obsessed with that music. I heard a bunch of those tunes and I was just like, ‘Well, I can write a song like that.’”
On Tuesday night (Jan. 27), Rose is rolling into Austin for a headlining set at Cactus Café before meeting up for more shows with Shovels & Rope. Then it’s up to Vermont for a slot at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge in South Burlington.
