Two things you can count on with 75-year-old Billy Joe Shaver: He speaks from the heart and there will be no filter. He writes songs the same way.
In the ‘70s, those songs found their way on to Waylon Jennings’ Honky Tonk Heroes, which would become a touchstone in the outlaw country movement. But Shaver never gave up his rambling ways and continues to tour and record today.
Last summer he released Long in the Tooth, a widely-lauded album that showed his blend of heartfelt cowboy poetry and thorny honky-tonk still has plenty of bite. He’s still inspired to write, too, and can draw on nearly eight decades of good times, bad times and crazy times.
When he stopped by the CMT studio to film one of his new songs, “I’ll Love You as Much as I Can,” he filled us in on the incredible story behind it.
He’ll keep telling it like it is on tour dates through February, including stops in Tomball, Texas, on Friday (Jan. 16) and Dallas on Saturday. Check out the CMT Edge live performance of Billy Joe Shaver’s true-to-life ballad, “I’ll Love You as Much as I Can.”
