Jason Isbell’s “Different Days” Reflects Life’s Changes

Jason Isbell’s “Different Days” has long been my favorite track on his 2013 breakthrough Southeastern album, and when I heard him sing it at City Winery in Nashville this week, I thought, “Hey, that is the perfect song for thinking about New Year’s resolutions.” No, it isn’t written about the lingering desire to change. Instead, it’s a thoughtful song about the realization that you’ve grown up and become a different person. Hopefully even a better person.

Isbell filmed this solo, acoustic rendition in the CMT studio last summer, capturing it in one take. He also gave a little bit of history behind writing the song, which he describes as positive and hopeful – just what we need this time of year. As 2015 approaches, it seems like the right time to bring it around again, especially as a reminder that he is a skillful guitarist, too.
