The Common Linnets aren’t all that common in the United States, although the band gained a wide following abroad after a second-place finish in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Now they’re joining the pecking order of An Americana Christmas, a New West Records compilation making its bow this winter.
Ilse DeLange, a solo artist known for her emotional songwriting, founded the band and named it after a songbird that breeds near her hometown in the Netherlands. With influences ranging from Emmylou Harris to Fleetwood Mac, the newly-formed band toured Europe this year behind its high-profile single, “Calm After the Storm,” which reached No. 1 in 14 countries.
For An Americana Christmas, the Common Linnets have presented “At Christmas Time,” a powerful number about the bittersweet feelings the holidays often present. Sure, looking back at holiday memories can bring a smile, but just as often, it’s easy to get sentimental — and a little bit choked up. DeLange’s vulnerable vocal really brings the song home.
Enjoy the Common Linnets’ “At Christmas Time.”
