In September, country legend Randy Travis made a rare public appearance in Denison, Texas, a little more than one year after suffering a nearly fatal stroke.

Stepping into the Four Rivers Outreach banquet with just a little help from a walking stick, Travis’ recovery so far appears to be truly remarkable.

“Every day, we go to speech therapy and physical therapy and occupational therapy,” Travis’ fiancee Mary Smith said. “We’re learning words and phrases, learning to sing. Of course, the music and the songs come easy for him … he’s working on it. He’s got the heart of a warrior, and he doesn’t stop.”

In honor of Travis’ hard-won progress, let’s take a look back at the vintage video for his 1991 single, “Heroes and Friends.”

Co-written by Travis and Don Schlitz, the song’s heartwarming sentiment has never meant more:

“Heroes will help you find the good in yourself/Friends won’t forsake you for somebody else/They’ll both stand beside you through thick and through thin/That’s how it goes with heroes and friends.”

The video features some of Travis’ heroes like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans (Rogers even makes a cameo appearance at the end), but Travis himself is a true hero to many country fans.

Keep that in mind as you enjoy Randy Travis’ “Heroes and Friends.”
