Bryan Sutton Branches Out in “That’s Where I Belong”

Although he grew up singing in church and in his family’s band, Bryan Sutton is better known in acoustic circles for his world-class guitar playing. Lately, though, he’s been singing on stage more and more, often in a duo with his buddy, Tim O’Brien. With that happy development, it’s fitting that Sutton takes center stage for his new music video, “That’s Where I Belong.”

The Asheville, North Carolina native has recorded five albums for Sugar Hill Records, claimed seven IBMA awards as a guitarist and even won a Grammy by recording “Whiskey Before Breakfast” with the incomparable Doc Watson. So it’s not like he has to prove himself. Asked about his decision to sing on his latest album, Into My Own, Sutton said he simply didn’t want to live with the regret of never trying it.

“It’s a little strange, just because people expect me to be, you know, guitar player guy,” he told CMT Edge upon the album’s release in April. “But I guess to try to honor my own artistry and continue to peel back the layers of whatever it is that I really do, I feel like that’s part of it.”

For this performance clip, Sutton surrounds himself with talented friends like Luke Bulla (fiddle, harmony vocals), Casey Campbell (mandolin), Sam Grisman (bass) and Noam Pikelny (banjo).
