After releasing a promising EP last year, Americana duo Carolina Story is turning the page with the companion piece, Chapter Two. One of the new project’s highlights is a twangy tune called “Crash and Burn,” a lively love song Ben Roberts wrote about his younger days before he met his wife and singing partner, Emily.
“There are some things that I’m not proud of, and there for a while, I had lost my head a little,” he tells CMT Edge. “I wasn’t quite sure how it was all going to turn out for me. I was drawing on a lot of personal experience. The song is about not even having the trust in yourself that you’re going to do the right things. It speaks to that nature to leave instead of stay when things get hard.”
He adds, “When I met my wife, Emily, light came back into my life and I had found what I was searching for. It can be a long, hard road at times, and my road would be much longer and much harder if it was not for her.”
Emily points out, “When I first heard this song, I was definitely flattered. It is something really special to be told that by your husband and then put in a song that we plan to sing over and over again. This is just one of our songs that we get to sing night after night that I truly believe reaffirms our love and devotion to one another every time we sing it. It is something very unifying, and I don’t take it for granted.”
Look for Chapter Two, produced by Blake Chancey, on June 24. And listen for the duo’s Grand Ole Opry debut on June 28. On a personal note, the couple is expecting their first child this fall. Check out the CMT Edge premiere of Carolina Story’s “Crash and Burn.”
