Ashley Monroe says she wrote “Weed Instead of Roses” when she was just 19 years old, which might help explain the attitude that’s halfway between sarcasm and seriousness. In the song, the sassy singer would rather dispense with romantic tradition and have her man bring home a green gift they can both have some fun with.
Even though she’s now 26, that rebellious, against-the-grain impulse still lives on in Monroe’s music, making her a perfect choice for this year’s Americana Music Festival in Nashville. Earlier this week, she landed on the list of confirmed artists for the four-day event in September, which just happens to coincide with the harvest of many kinds of crops.
