Foo Fighters’ Chris Shiflett Tips a Hat to Honky-Tonk

Chris Shiflett is usually found busting out crunchy guitar leads for the rock band Foo Fighters, but his side project Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants square off in a different direction. The band dives deep into the classic honky-tonk of artists like Del Reeves and Wynn Stewart and comes out swinging with nine high-energy covers and one original song on All Hat and No Cattle, arriving on July 30.

Shiflett says Faron Young’s rebellious “Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young,” is a particular favorite. Now a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Young landed his first No. 1 with this tune in the summer of 1955.

“I love the Faron Young version of this song because it’s almost rockabilly but still totally honky-tonk hillbilly,” he explains. “It sounds primal. Plus, it always goes over good live. It gets the people dancing.”
