Shannon McNally’s soulful vocals are such a match for Bobby Charles’ rich songwriting, her new album, Small Town Talk, never feels like a stodgy tribute. Instead it’s a celebration of his wit, his worldview and his way with a melody.
The brand new video for the album’s title track reflects her admiration for Charles, as well as blues musician Joe Ayers and her pals Darlin and Devine Harvey.
“We made this video in New Orleans and in Holly Springs, Miss., my two homes. My co-stars are some of my best friends,” McNally tells CMT Edge. “In Holly Springs, the world-renowned Joe Ayers joins me on my porch and for a stroll through the town square. In New Orleans, Darlin and Devine Harvey join me to tell secrets.”
There’s a true sense of camaraderie in the video as well as the album, which she recorded with the help of the one and only Dr. John, a Louisiana legend in his own right.
“I’m thrilled with how this video came out: Long shots that don’t insinuate that the viewer has no attention span and good-natured love that doesn’t beat the viewer up with unnecessary roughness,” McNally says.
