After six hard-country studio albums, Oklahomans Jason Boland & the Stragglers think they have perfected their Red Dirt swagger on their latest project.
“Dark Dirty Mile is the way we want to sound. Every person that worked on this album brought a significant piece of the puzzle to complete a funky little image of life, starting specifically with that song,” Boland says of the new album. “This is the first time we have used the first song on a record as the title track as well as the first single, but ‘Dark and Dirty Mile’ just sets the mood of the whole record.”
Bringing a decidedly philosophical bend to the classic do-right-by-God theme, Boland lays out his barroom insights with help from a woozy guitar and solid backbeat. It’s a life filled with calamity by his calculations, but Boland’s solution is to just “sin and bear it.”
That might make some people a little anxious about salvation, but Boland’s deep baritone puts my mind right at ease. Check out Jason Boland & the Stragglers’ “Dark and Dirty Mile” in this CMT Edge exclusive stream.
