Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris Bring John Denver Home

John Denver and his emotional songwriting were something of a punch line by the time I came around to his music. It definitely colored the way I heard those songs, and that’s too bad because in listening to The Music Is You: A Tribute to John Denver, I enjoyed the elegance in how simply he could state his feelings. My Morning Jacket, Josh Ritter and Lucinda Williams are just a few of the artists who apparently agree and took part in the project, out on Tuesday (April 2), but my favorite song on the album has to be Brandi Carlile and Emmylou Harris’ take on “Country Roads, Take Me Home.” Denver’s vivid description of a most heavenly place soars to new heights through Carlile’s voice, joined by Harris’ encouraging harmony. Give this track a chance, and see if you’re not smiling by the time you get to the song’s famous refrain — “West Virginia! Mountain mama! Take me home, country roads.”
