Son Volt Seek to Win “Hearts and Minds”

Laced with twin fiddles, tasteful steel guitar and accordion, Son Volt’s “Hearts and Minds” wins me over with its plodding gait and old-time feel. Often credited as a major influence on the alternative country movement, front man Jay Farrar sets up shop in a velvety barroom and sprinkles in shots of rusting rail yards and hulking bridges for this brand new video. It’s the lead track on the band’s new album, Honky Tonk, which finds Farrar learning to play pedal steel guitar and delving into a Bakersfield-inspired sound.
