Growing up in South Carolina, singer-songwriter KaiL Baxley couldn’t help absorbing the traditions of the blues, hip-hop, gospel and soul. He even got to know James Brown, who lived nearby. When his own sound began to take shape, there was only one direction to go. On Feb. 5 Baxley’s double EP Heatstroke/The Wind and the War comes out featuring that unique fusion of American roots and contemporary attitude. Check it out for yourself on the beat-driven “Don’t Matter to Me,” built low and slow with an outlaw’s swagger.
