Mike Doughty Feels at Home on “Country Roads”

Soul Coughing rocker Mike Doughty was born in Kentucky, but as a military brat grew up all over the world. So for his cover of John Denver’s classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” Doughty combines his country roots with a slick new backbeat.

“‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ was my first favorite song,” he says. “I listened to it with my ear pressed against a boxy, bulky cassette-tape player in the back of a massive, green 1970s Oldsmobile.”

The new track comes from Doughty’s covers album, The Flip Is Another Honey, and features Rosanne Cash singing a delicate harmony line as pure and crisp as mountain air. Take a look at the video and find out how Doughty stirs up this familiar concoction.
