Classically-schooled violinist Andrew Bird is highly respected in the avant-garde folk-pop world, but he can strip things down to jam, too. His “old-time” sets, where Bird and his band would switch to acoustic instruments and cluster around a single microphone to cover classic country tunes, became reliable stand-out moments on recent tours. Now he’s offering an entire album created in that old-time spirit. Called Hands of Glory, the project reworks his recent Break It Yourself songs, adds a few new originals and covers some of Bird’s favorite artists. While recording the album in a secluded barn, Bird and his band shot a video for “Three White Horses” that illustrates his idea. Check it out.
