Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe looks at the work of the acclaimed British writer and producer through a country-music lens, and finds that his simple, sensitive songs stand up well to reinterpretation.
Along with admirers like Robert Ellis, Amanda Shires, Hayes Carll and Lori McKenna, Nashville native Caitlin Rose contributed to the album, and her rendition of “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide” stands out for its crisp beauty.
“He’s one of the most interesting people in music,” says Rose in a call to CMT Edge. “Like those kind of songs you heard in the ‘50s that you never forget for the rest of your life — those are the kind of songs that Nick Lowe writes.”
Clearly, “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide” made an impact on Rose, who says she quickly jumped on her favorite track when the project began.
“My friend Lonnie made me a mix when I was about 17 years old, and it had this song on it,” she explained. “I just went through a lot of breakups with it and got very attached to it.”
So attached, in fact, she didn’t change much except to add her delicate vocals and a band that tiptoes carefully around the singer’s broken heart.
“It’s such a perfect song that I didn’t really know how I could make it better,” she admits.
